The Four Essential Supplements
“Essential nutrients” are considered essential because our bodies require them to function optimally, but they have to be obtained from our diet.
If we are being honest, even if you aim to consistently eat healthy, the quality of the produce and animal products from stores these days are not what they used to be. Animals are fed antibiotics, hormones, and nutrient depleted plants. Crops are growing in nutrient depleted soils and sprayed with all kinds of chemicals. Organic produce, grass fed beef, antibiotic and hormone free poultry, and wild fish are either difficult to find, or too expensive for many families to consistently afford. Packaged foods are laden with hormone disruptors, gut triggers, and blood sugar spikers!
All this to say that the best we can do is source out high quality supplements to provide our body with the essential nutrients it needs to function. Below are what we consider the most important ones. Of course there are others like protein powders, collagen, electrolytes, and in some cases higher doses of particular vitamins like B12 or iron depending on each persons case and individual needs.
Also important to remember is that not all supplements are created equal. For example, a liquid Vit D is going to be much more advantageous than a tablet simply because Vit D is a fat soluble vitamin. When it comes already emulsified in a fat like MCT oil that is in the drop form, your body is much more likely to use that Vit D then if you took the same amount in a tablet.
The same goes for a multivitamin (or prenatal vitamin!). Many generic brands use forms of certain vitamins that our body has to process through different reactions in order to get it into its usable form. The actual amount you absorb from this type of multi is limited, despite the quantity claimed on the label.
Probiotic diversity is also important and switching up the different products you use over time can be helpful, especially if ever need to take antibiotics.
The bonus with the essential supplements is HYDRATION! Check out this article and infographic all about drinking enough water.
